Ironmonger Row Baths
What with sirens, tube strikes and zebra crossing where you take your life in your hands, London can be a pretty stressful city. Thank God then for places like the Ironmonger Row Baths. Harking back to more innocent times, this quaint spa (housed as it is a fine Grade-II listed 1930's building) is as charming as it is unpretentious. Eager staff, a relaxed atmosphere, greatly improved by subdued lighting and judicious use of wood, make for a pleasant experience. As do the Turkish Baths. (Remember, don't forget your towel.) Although the facilities are run by a charity, there's nothing remotely worthy or YMCAish here. On the contrary. One thinks of the excellent 30.5 metre pool, the steam room, the hot rooms, the frigidarium, the wide selection of massages and scrub. Nor must you to break the piggy bank for these pleasures, for prices are up to £10 for a session, depending on the time of day and include a swim when the pool is available.
